We know how to fight climate change. Electric utilities are lowering carbon emissions with a mix of hydropower, wind and solar. In a similar way, the natural gas system is evolving by working to provide communities with renewable natural gas and clean hydrogen over time.
But some activists demand City Council ban natural gas, and Mayor Vinis says the City of Eugene plans to revisit this issue in June. This, despite the overwhelming public support of energy choice that ultimately drove City Council to repeal the gas ban it had passed last February. In addition, there are reliability concerns and a City report projecting that a ban leads to very little carbon savings (less than 2% emissions reduction by 2037).1
There is a better path to a renewable future – one where our local natural gas company, NW Natural, continues its partnership with Eugene, and one that doesn’t risk energy reliability and affordability.
